Take a look at what my kiddos have been learning.....

GRADE 6: We focused on REALISM. I gave my students photographs of owls and they chose one to draw in pencil. We talked about how to create the feathers using hatching and cross hatching with a black sharpie. We used vine charcoal to create the gray values. Drawing is just "seeing" and I encouraged them to really look at the lines and shapes in the photographs. They were amazed at what they actually could see and record!
GRADE 5: Here we talked about the concept of STYLIZING. An image that is stylized looks like the object (an owl), but is designed using interesting ideas with shapes and lines. We drew the contour of the owl and designed the interior of the owl. Watercolor pencils were used over the black sharpie work, and a little water gave these that "painterly" look!

GRADE 1: Letter Owls! Again, we used some of the fun painted papers we made and used the letter U to make the owls body. The letter B was for the eyes, the letter D for the wings, and the letter O for the whites of the eyes. We used black marker to outline and construction paper crayons for the color on our dark backgrounds. Cutting and gluing was a skill we practiced on these collages. Collage is a french word which means to "paste". Cute, cute, cute!!

I spent some time painting this cute thing for my new art loft. It was very relaxing for me!

Here are a couple of pictures of the 100 year old historic building we bought in the urban core, approximately 8 blocks from downtown Kansas City. My husband and I plan to make this our live/work forever space! It is four stories high with over 1000 sq. ft. per floor. My art loft will be on the top floor with a gorgeous view of downtown KC! I am calling my studio "Studio 67" because there are 67 steps to the top floor. Boy will I stay in shape!! It is my hope to create and offer classes in this amazing space. Our hope is to be in by this Thanksgiving!

We are trying to keep the interior and as much brick as possible to keep the integrity of this 100 year old beauty! We poured concrete floors on the main level and will stain those soon!

Each year I stretch myself by trying new projects, and new ways to inspire kiddos! I feel like I have grown tremendously in the last 37 years! I was fortunate enough to hear an inspiring message by our Teacher of the Year, and it really put things in perspective for me. She told us to not forget about taking care of ourselves! We need to put ourselves first so we can be there for students. She also said what most of us already know, but usually forget.... and that is.... kids don't remember how your room is decorated or the posters you have up. They remember YOU. That got me thinking about my favorite teachers and why I like them SO much. It was because they made a personal connection with me! Teaching over 550 students makes that a daunting challenge to say the least! But my goal is to get to know my students through their art and art experiences! Making art that is personal to them is my vision for all students! With that said, on with the planning of art lessons!

The first thing we did this year grades 1-6 was to spend a day painting papers! What fun!! We will have a great stash for projects this year. I even pulled some of the papers back out to layer more paint on with the next class.
We begin with a "U" shape in the middle of the paper. We drew our portraits in brown crayons.

At the top of the "U" shape, I show them the 3 parts of an eye. The football shape, the circle for the iris and the black dot for the pupil. I ask them to draw carefully trying to make each eye the same size and shape.

We move to the nose with a tiny U shape and two curves for the nostrils. For the lips, we begin with a lip line. I show them how to use their finger to draw an imaginary line straight down from the inside corner of the eye. We even do this on our own faces. This way they understand where the features belong on a face. We draw the lip line first, then a curve for the bottom lip. I ask them to turn to their neighbor and ask them what their top lip looks like....two mountains, or two hills. They love this part! Is their top lip more pointed or rounded??

We add a neck and shoulders. I ask them where the top of the ears lines up, and they are correct when answering by the eyes. We draw the top of the head with a curve and I show them several hairstyles on the board. Is their hair parted in the middle, on the side, do they have bangs, braids, ponytails, or do they have a buzz cut??? It was fun watching them add all the details that make them individuals. Check out some of our portraits below.

A feat that can be difficult when you are an elementary art teacher. Those of you who do what I do....know what I mean. I am showing the month of June and July and needed 8 fresh pieces. I love painting all types of subject matter and especially love bold bright colors with heavy brushstrokes. I think this happened because I was trained in college to be detail oriented with my painting. It just feels SO freeing to be able to move and swing my arms when I paint!
The thick black lines were done with black sharpie and the bright, bold colors were done in marker.

We began in the middle of the paper drawing in sharpie, making each line thick! I asked students to "cluster" their flowers, showing me some overlapping. They did some experimenting with the markers and blending of colors with this medium.
I got it for $1 at a garage sale. I don't think they really knew what it was, or the value of it. I told students that the layers of colored fabric were all hand stitched by the Kuna Indians of the San Blas Islands off Panama. We viewed a quick video which I found on you tube. This is the one we watched; you can see it HERE.

Here are the steps for creating these molas.

Materials

9 x 12 black paper

9 x 12 white paper

markers/glue/scissors

Crayola woodless colored pencils (you could use any medium for the background)

embroidery thread/needles/needle threader/tape

1. On the white 9 x 12 paper draw an image for your mola. We viewed and talked about the images the Kuna Indians used, which come mostly from nature. I let students pick any image they wanted for their molas and I got some interesting ideas. Animals, flowers, small creatures, monsters, etc.

2. Once drawn in pencil, students used markers to create the layers of color.

3. These were then cut out and glued to the black paper.

4. We used Crayola woodless colored pencils to add a repetitive background.

5. I showed students a simple running stitch to stitch around the image. This gave them an idea of how long it would have taken for a mola to be created. I used a needle threader as students were not very good at threading. I also showed them how to pre-punch their holes into the black paper so the stitching would be more even. They really enjoyed the sewing part....even the boys! Here is one student threading her needle.

Worry dolls are tiny handmade dolls created by the people of Guatemala as a remedy for worrying. According to Mayan legend, you tell your worry doll all your worries before bedtime and you are able to sleep peacefully at night. The dolls take away all your worries during the night!

I found a great book called "Silly Billy" by Anthony Brown which is about the legend of the worry dolls. I used this as a resource before watching the video demonstration.

Here are the supplies you need to create a worry doll. This lesson would work for 2-6th graders and older! I had fun making mine!!

1 full length pipe cleaner (any color)
1 pipe cleaner, cut in half (any color)
5-6 pieces of yarn 6" long (for the hair)
a ball of yarn about 3 yards long
wiggly eyes (optional)
fabric, felt, for clothing

They knew each square was a piece of the puzzle for Munch's "The Scream".

I cut each square out and laminated it, so it would last through the painting process. Each card was numbered at the top so it would be easy to put together.
It was a fun filled 3 days in Kansas City. The Nelson Art Museum, The Kansas City Art Institute and the Plaza Marriott hosted over 400 art educators from the fine state of Missouri. I had some great times connecting, attended some great workshops as well as a really fancy reception in Kirkwood Hall at the Nelson Art Gallery! Here are some of the pics of our beautiful city and the fun!
They usually want to apply everything to their collage.....and I do mean everything they have access to! Being selective and giving them steps to create an interesting finished piece is the key!

I recently showed them a powerpoint I created with the work of artist Teesha Moore (with her permission of course to reproduce her images for teaching purposes). You can check it out HERE.

I created this step by step lesson when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. After missing a half year of school with treatments, I ran across Teesha Moore on pinterest. I loved her work and began a collage of my own. It was truly healing! This one was called "Faith".

I did not do much with the idea for a lesson, until I was diagnosed a second time with breast cancer. After my double mastectomy and missing yet another half a year in 2011, I was feeling pretty low.

I began my second collage titled, "Some Days You Just Have to Get Over It!" Doing this piece finally got me out of my funk and looking forward.

Not only can this lesson incorporate literacy and writing, it can also give you a chance to talk to students about why people create art and how it makes them feel. Here is my second collage in the style of Teesha Moore.

They used oil pastels on top of the Alpha Biggie Tempera paint to create all the details. I just love using these two mediums together. Take a look at our results! I got some interesting containers!
Using watercolors, 1st graders painted the giraffe in yellows, oranges, and reds. They used the cool colors of blue, green and violet on a light blue piece of construction paper and painted a simple design for the background. We used the Alpha Biggie Tempera cakes to paint the background because the paint is more intense on the colored paper. We cut out the giraffes and glued them to the background. We have been working really hard at drawing and painting all kinds of animals! I love the expressions on these!
After a simple directed drawing at the board with second graders, and outlining with a black sharpie, I showed them how to use a gray crayon to shade around the edges of the white bunny. All I had to do is show them someone's white shirt and they were able to see that even white has shadows.

Then I demonstrated the "wet on wet" technique with my educational watercolors. By applying the water to the paper first, then dropping small amounts of watercolors into the water, we were able to create the light pastel colors so popular around Easter time. I am in love with all the wonderful expressions on these bunnies!
I always welcome anyone into our art studio, and I immediately asked students to let our visitors know what we were working on. Little did I know, they were there for a very special announcement. The visitors were from the district selection committee and I was chosen as one of 12 finalists for Teacher of the Year. We are a BIG district, but little did I know that we have over 1500 teachers in our 26 schools until they told us. When my 4th graders heard this they began singing Happy Award Day To You....to the Happy Birthday To You tune. It was heart-warming.

Each of the amazing 12 finalists had a small write up on our district website. Here is what they wrote about me. Truly humbling!

Ms. Welling teaches art at Cedar Creek Elementary School and has been an educator for 36 years, 18 years with the R-7 district. She has received two PEAK grants from the Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation to establish an art library in her classroom. She is a published author in Arts & Activities magazine and has won several leadership awards through Artsonia. Ms. Welling also received the R-7 Learning for Life award in 2012.

I absolutely LOVE what I do, and consider it an honor to work with kids! I love exposing them to art in a way that makes them think from a different perspective. I see kids blossom and come up with all kinds of new and refreshing ideas. They are the leaders of our future generation!

On a side note...our school...Cedar Creek Elementary had another teacher, Kari Swezy (3rd grade) receive a nomination. I feel blessed and fortunate to work with such talented, caring educators!
They mix the secondary colors of orange, green and violet. They also create the six intermediate colors. Those are yellow-orange, yellow-green, red-violet, red-orange, blue-green, and blue-violet.

Here are the formulas and how I teach students to mix those colors.

R + Y = O
R + B = V
Y + B = G

To mix the intermediate colors you

Add a little red to the yellow to make yellow-orange.
Add a little yellow to the red to make red-orange.

Add a little blue to the red to make blue-violet
Add a little red to the blue to make red-violet.

Add a little blue to the yellow to make yellow-green.
Add a little yellow to the blue to make blue-green.

Once they have a handle on all of that, we move on to mixing tints, shades and tones. We use the neutral colors of black, white and gray to create these. One rule I have when mixing these is ALWAYS add the darker color to the lighter color.
.
A tint lightens a color, so add the color to the white a little at a time to create various tints.
A shade darkens a color, so add the black to the color a little at a time to create various shades.
A tone dulls a color, so add the color to the gray when mixing various tones.

Now... on to the lesson. Every year I have had students create wheels and repeat the designs in them. They always turn out great, but I put a different twist on the wheel this year. Here's what I did.

1. Draw a large organic leaf form from top to bottom on a 12 x 18 white paper.
2. Divide the leaf in half vertically.
3. Create six sections on each side of the leaf. (Like the veins on a leaf) You now have 12 sections.
4. In each of the sections create 7 areas to paint. Students will paint two tints, two shades, two tones and the main color in each section. I had them try to create the same design across from each other to get a symmetrical look....even though it is not truly symmetrical. In the past the transfer process of their design always took a lot of time. Now, they can simply freehand their design.

Here is an example of what it should look like before they start painting. I also have them label each section with the colors so they don't accidentally paint colors in the wrong spots. This also gives me a quick overview of who knows the color wheel order and who still needs help.

This lesson takes us 5-6 class sessions, but it is well worth it because they are learning to create 84 (12 sections x 7 different colors) colors and they have an understanding of how to mix these colors. Here are some of the finished color wheels. Once painted, they outlined the different colors in black marker and cut them out and glued them onto a neutral colored background. This lesson is done before I commission them to paint a landscape. Look for those in the near future.

PIGS & COWS. After our simple perspective farm painting, we worked on Picasso Roosters and then painted pigs and cows. We drew these in pencil as a directed drawing, painted them with Alpha Biggie tempera cakes and finally used black watercolor markers to define the details. I got some really cute expressions!
I showed them a front view and a side view of the bird's face. We wanted ours to have a springtime theme, so they added flowers to the painting. It was a great opportunity to practice our painting skills.

Here's how we did them.

1. A basic sketch in pencil, followed by painting over the pencil lines with Alpha Biggie Tempera Cakes.
2. We used a black marker to outline all our lines the second session, and used oil pastels to add color to the beaks, and flowers.

Aren't these just darling......
I read my third graders the book "Dog Heaven" by her and they shared their feelings about their pets being part of the family! It was touching to hear how important their pets were to their family!! I followed that book with "Why is Blue Dog Blue" by George Rodrigue. It was an opportunity to talk about color and why artists use certain colors in their work.

After an initial basic sketch on the board of "dog details", each student drew their own dog or one they would like to own, and we painted those in the Alpha Biggie tempera cakes. Once dry, details, patterns and contrast were added with oil pastels. Here are some of the results!
She is amazing and makes up her own zentangles and gives them fun names. You can see her work HERE.

A BORB is a squished orb with a border. Her work is in black and white and here was my first attempt at it. I used curved lines instead of straight lines on the orbs and shaded to create more depth. I cut these out and glued them to black paper.

Then I thought it would be cool to add color to these fun shapes. In these examples I painted the orbs in the bright educational Crayola watercolors before adding the black sharpie work in both fine and extra fine. I used the extra fine for my patterns in the background. I used vine charcoal to add the shading.

Here are the steps to create these:

1. Draw two rows of flattened ovals (orbs) stacked one on top of the other.

2. Create a double lined border around each stack. Leaving the white edge helps with contrast.

3. Add a hole with a border and attach curved lines going in any direction.

4. Paint the orbs.

5. Sharpie all pencil lines with a fine point sharpie.

6. Add a background with an extra fine point sharpie.

7. Use vine charcoal to shade each orb and hole, as well as the edges of the stacks.

There are all kinds of variations with this! Have fun!!

Students looked at Picasso's rooster before drawing. We sketched these on 9 x 12 black paper, then I showed them how to use oil pastels and layer and blend. This was a new concept for them as most just want to color the areas in. I was pleased with their efforts!
Here is Picasso's rooster....
You can find her work HERE. This is a mixed media lesson and the students enjoyed working with all the different mediums.
Here is my example with the steps to create these.

1. Divide your 9 x 12 white paper into 6-7 sections with pencil, then paint them different colors. I used the Alpha Biggie Tempera Blocks, but any paint would work.

2. The second class we outlined the colored areas with black marker and created simple designs in each with the black marker. I told students to think about what they would see under the ocean to come up with some of their patterns.

3. They used oil pastels to accent the black patterns and add even more color and detail.

4. The last class we drew the fish on black construction paper and outlined them with Crayola sticks (wood-less colored pencils) You could use oil pastels for this as well. We kept the shape of the fish and details simple as there is a lot going on in the backgrounds. The black is used to contrast all the colors!

Here is the student's work.

We talked about using diagonal lines for simple perspective so the land looks like it is coming towards you. I talked about FOLK ART , but you could also reference ROMERO BRITTO as a tie in to this lesson. They did a step by step directed drawing with me at the board. We sketched ours on 9 x 12 white drawing paper.

Here's how we drew it...

1. Draw a soft wavy horizontal line across the middle of the paper for the horizon.
2. Draw a rectangle on the horizon line. Draw another rectangle beside the first one.
3. Draw a triangle on top of the second rectangle, then a horizontal line to the edge of the paper for the roof. Add the barn door details.
4. Add a silo. (Now, I grew up on a farm and had to explain that this is where farmer's store their grain)
5. Add stylized trees, and a fence on the horizon line.
6. Start with a vertical line that is in the middle of the horizon line and goes straight down to the bottom of the page. There will be two more lines on each side of this vertical line.
7. Move over a bit and draw a diagonal line to the corner of the paper.
8. Move over a bit more and draw the last line to the side of the paper. REPEAT this on the other side.
9. Draw one horizontal line in each section to break up the space.

10.Once drawn, we traced all pencil lines with a black sharpie and added simple patterns and shapes to our sections of land, also with our sharpies.

11. Then they colored the barn, fence, tree trunks, and patterns pressing hard with the crayons so the paint would resist.

12. We added patterns to the silo, and trees with crayons as well. Be sure to use colors other than green for the trees so they will show up when you paint the trees!

13. The last step was to paint over the crayon work. I encouraged all kinds of colors...even for the sky.

Each student was VERY successful with this lesson and understood simple perspective when finished! Check out our results!

1. We began with a sketch in pencil that filled the 9 x 12 white paper making sure to use different viewpoints (front and side views of eyes, noses, mouths.)
2. We used oil pastels to add some color and patterns, making sure to leave some white paper as we painted over the oils. Be sure to press dark with the oils so the paint will resist.
3. We used watercolors and painted over the oil pastels, making sure to choose different colors to contrast our oil pastel colors.
